Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and the members of the Phoenix City Council voted on June 19 in favor of mandatory face coverings for the city.
The mandatory mask order applies to everyone two years of age or older. Face coverings must be worn when leaving home or when residents are within six feet of another person not within their family.
"Community spread is accelerating in Arizona at speeds that should concern everyone," Gallego said, according to a press release from the city's website. "It will take the entire community coming together to protect all who live, work and play in our city. Scientists say wearing a simple face covering is something we must do to slow the spread – and Phoenix is listening."
This ruling comes after a June 17 executive order from Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey. This order states that cities within the state can adopt policies regarding masks in public to stop the spread of COVID-19.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends cloth masks in public and maintaining social distancing measures to help prevent the spread of the virus.
