Zoox, an autonomous vehicle company owned by Amazon, announced on Mar. 25 that it will open a Fusion Center in Scottsdale as part of its expansion into the Phoenix area. The new facility is expected to support Zoox’s robotaxi operations and contribute to local hiring.
The opening of the Fusion Center marks another step in Scottsdale’s efforts to attract technology companies and foster economic growth. City Manager Greg Caton said, “Zoox’s decision to locate in Scottsdale reflects the strength of our local economy and our ability to attract forward-thinking companies. This investment adds to the growing number of technology companies choosing Scottsdale.”
The center will serve as a hub where teams monitor trips, guide vehicles in real time, and assist riders when needed. Zoox plans to start by mapping local streets with safety drivers before moving toward more advanced autonomous testing in Phoenix. The company is developing a purpose-built robotaxi designed without a steering wheel or pedals.
Scottsdale has drawn artists, writers and health seekers since its early years, fostering a blend of Western heritage and cultural activities, as outlined on the official history page. The city features various departments and boards along with recreational spaces like parks and golf courses in Indian Bend Wash based on the official organizational chart.
By 2000, Scottsdale’s population exceeded 202,000 residents across about 185 square miles according to the official history page. It functions through a council-manager government structure where the council holds authority to legislate, budget and appoint officials according to the official website.
Scottsdale ranked among the top 15 safest U.S. cities with populations over 100,000 according to Forbes as reported on its official recognition page. The city earned its nickname ‘The West’s Most Western Town’ due to ranching roots and tourism appeal per its official history page.
As Zoox expands nationally with facilities also located in California’s Bay Area and Las Vegas, Arizona’s climate and road conditions are seen as favorable for testing new transportation technologies.
