Why most New Year’s weight-loss resolutions fail according to Scottsdale health coach

Every January, many people make resolutions to lose weight, but studies indicate that about 95% of those who lose weight regain it. This cycle often leads to disappointment and frustration.

Patsy James, a nationally board-certified health and wellness coach and Managing Partner of My Healthy Body in Scottsdale, says the problem is not lack of effort but rather the method used. “Most resolutions rely on willpower and restriction instead of addressing habits, mindset, and long-term behavior change,” says James. “Sustainable weight loss requires a system, not a short-term fix.”

James draws on both her professional background and personal experience—she has lost more than 100 pounds herself. Through her Strong Within program at My Healthy Body, she works with clients to build lasting habits and accountability while focusing on lifestyle changes rather than quick diets. In some cases, GLP-1 medications are incorporated as an additional tool along with coaching.

In the past two years, James has assisted over 193 individuals in collectively losing more than 5,000 pounds by helping them move away from repeated dieting attempts toward sustained results without shame.

“Asking people to try harder hasn’t worked,” James says. “Teaching them how to work smarter with support does.”
