Scottsdale gears up for community engagement events; appoints new mayoral chief of staff

The Scottsdale Police Department is preparing for the upcoming school year with a Back to School drive aimed at collecting 600 backpacks. The event will take place from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the McKellips District parking lot, located at 7601 E. McKellips Road. Participants can donate a new backpack and enjoy a ride in a police car on a short, closed course if they are aged 12 or older.

In an effort to engage residents in meaningful conversations about local issues, the city of Scottsdale has launched "Speak Up Scottsdale." This online platform allows community members to share their insights and feedback on city initiatives and services. Developed in partnership with ATOM Innovation, this initiative is part of the city's implementation of the Collaboration and Engagement chapter of the voter-approved Scottsdale General Plan 2035.

Adam Garrett Santiago has been appointed as Mayor Ortega's new Chief of Staff. Santiago previously held a similar position with the city of Glendale, Arizona. He holds degrees from Stony Brook University, New York University, and Harvard University. Santiago resides in Scottsdale with his family.

Scottsdale residents have opportunities to attend various public meetings this week including City Council meetings on Monday and Tuesday, as well as Planning Commission and Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee meetings later in the week.

A program highlighting Navajo Code Talkers will be held at Mustang Library on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 2 p.m., offering insight into how these young men used their native language to create an unbreakable code during World War II.

The Arizona Black Rodeo is scheduled for Sept. 1-2 at WestWorld featuring events such as bull riding and barrel racing along with entertainment like Spanky the Rodeo Clown.

Ongoing activities include Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West events and movie days, as well as Scottsdale ArtWalks every Thursday evening.

Scottsdale Water offers a citizen academy starting Sept. 13 for those interested in learning about its advanced municipal water systems.

The Scottsdale Sister Cities Association invites participation in various programs including a Student Leadership Conference on Aug. 26 and an Alamos Student Exchange program application due by Sept. 4.

Desert Mountain High School student Diana Lopez was recognized for her artwork depicting Latino farmworkers' contributions to agriculture production in America.

Investments continue in road maintenance with paving crews applying micro seal coating over several months to improve street conditions across the city.

Fleet Management has received a $165,000 natural gas tax credit from the IRS for using alternative fuels such as natural gas.

Vendors interested in participating in Scottsdale’s annual Arts and Crafts Fair must apply by Oct. 27 for this event taking place Nov. 4 at Granite Reef Senior Center.

The city is also seeking applicants for Wastewater Maintenance Technician I – Trainee positions offering comprehensive benefits packages.

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West has been named “No.1 Western Museum" by True West magazine based on its exhibits and cultural resource promotion efforts.
