The city of Scottsdale is taking steps to address the growing issue of short-term rentals by submitting three proposals to the Arizona League of Cities and Towns. These proposals aim to be included in the league's legislative agenda for the upcoming 2024 session of the Arizona Legislature.
The Arizona League of Cities and Towns represents about 90 local governments across the state. Scottsdale's proposals are set to be reviewed by the Resolutions Committee at their annual conference on August 29.
Scottsdale's proposals request that the Arizona Legislature amend state laws, allowing local governments to:
- Cap the total number of short-term rentals within their community.
- Limit the density of these rentals in specific areas.
- Establish separation requirements between short-term rental properties.
These measures are intended to restore the quality of life that residents enjoyed before a previous ban on short-term rentals was overturned by legislation. Mayor David D. Ortega stated, "Scottsdale neighborhoods have been shattered by short-term rentals, which are commercial businesses in residential zoned areas. Our residents are clamoring for peace and quiet, free from late-night disruptions and party house annoyances – we want our neighborhoods back." He further emphasized, "We ask that the legislature restore local control so each municipality can determine appropriate limits and guidelines."
