René Ephram Wendell, a former Scottsdale City Council member, passed away on December 24 at the age of 81. Wendell served on the council from 1984 to 1988 and was appointed vice mayor in 1986. His involvement in city affairs was marked by his dedication to preserving Scottsdale's unique culture and architecture.
Mayor David D. Ortega commented on Wendell's legacy, stating, “René will be remembered by all for his kind spirit, commitment to others and wry sense of humor.” Although Ortega did not serve alongside Wendell, he expressed admiration for his community dedication.
Wendell was known for his expertise as a horseman and cowboy, earning him a lifetime membership with the Scottsdale Charros. The city honored him by naming the Wendell Arena at WestWorld after him. His passion for art and horses led to a celebrated collection of bronze sculptures within Scottsdale’s fine arts community.
Among his achievements were contributions to the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt project and the expansion of Scottsdale Airpark. Born on January 8, 1941, in Evanston, Illinois, Wendell moved with his family to Scottsdale where he graduated from high school in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard until his honorable discharge in 1965.
In addition to public service, Wendell operated the Scottsdale-based Wendell Design Group flower shop for over six decades.
