Southwest Gas announced on Apr. 9 that it is urging homeowners and contractors to contact 811 before starting any digging projects this spring, as part of National Safe Digging Month.

The company said the reminder comes at a time when nearly three in four American homeowners are planning outdoor projects involving digging, which could affect an estimated 60 million households nationwide. According to Southwest Gas, more than 10 million people intend to dig without first contacting the designated call-before-you-dig service, raising concerns about safety and potential utility strikes.

The importance of safe digging is heightened across Southwest Gas’ service areas due to rapid population growth and construction activity in Arizona, ongoing development in Nevada, and seasonal projects in California’s mountain and desert communities. The company emphasized that calling 811 or submitting an online request at call811.com allows for underground utility lines to be marked before work begins, helping prevent accidents. “Whether planting a tree, installing an irrigation system, or beginning a large construction project, knowing what lies beneath the surface is essential,” Southwest Gas said.

In addition to preventing damage during digging activities, Southwest Gas also advised residents to recognize signs of a natural gas leak—such as a sulfur-like odor similar to rotten eggs; unusual hissing or roaring sounds near appliances or the ground; and blowing dirt or bubbling water near pipeline markers—and evacuate immediately if these are detected. Anyone who suspects damage should call 911 and Southwest Gas at their emergency number.
