Valley of the Sun J and Desert Foothills Land Trust will host the next Sonoran Speaker Series event, titled “Medicine or Madness: The Use of Venom in Medicine,” on March 10, 2026. Dr. Ken Sweat from Arizona State University will discuss how compounds found in venom are being developed into medical treatments.

The lecture aims to show how some of nature’s most harmful substances are now being studied for their potential to treat human diseases. Dr. Sweat said, “It might seem strange that venom could become our partners in fighting disease. But nature has spent millions of years refining these toxic compounds. What’s exciting is that we’re learning how to turn something dangerous into something that can save lives.”

The presentation will cover examples of venoms from various species, including those native to local areas, and explain the scientific advances as well as challenges involved in this field.

The Sonoran Speaker Series is a free program designed to connect community members with the natural and cultural heritage of the Sonoran Desert. It offers educational opportunities for both residents and visitors interested in learning more about the region’s ecosystem and history.

The event is scheduled for March 10 at 6:00 PM at Valley of the Sun J, located at 12701 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85254. Admission is free but requires registration due to limited seating. More information about upcoming lectures can be found at dflt.org/speakerseries.

Valley of the Sun J has served the community since 1945 by providing enrichment programs for children and adults while celebrating Jewish culture and fostering community engagement.

Desert Foothills Land Trust works with communities to conserve sensitive lands and protect species across northern parts of the Valley. The organization manages nearly 1,100 acres over 29 preserves and received re-accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission in 2022.
