The City of Scottsdale has issued a warning to residents regarding a phishing scam that uses fraudulent emails appearing to be from city staff. These emails ask recipients for payment and may include links or attachments such as fake invoices. According to the city, these messages are being sent from email addresses not associated with official Scottsdale accounts.
City officials emphasized that there has been no compromise of municipal systems. However, they noted that the use of the city’s name and branding could make these emails seem legitimate.
“The city of Scottsdale does not request payment through unsolicited emails from individual staff members. Legitimate city payments are processed through official city systems and secure webpages, not through direct email requests. This phishing attempt is not related to the city’s new planning and permitting system. City staff will not email residents asking for payment through that system. Only trust official city emails that come from addresses ending in @ScottsdaleAZ.gov,” stated city representatives.
The city’s technology and security teams are monitoring the situation and working with law enforcement to address the scam.
Residents are advised to verify sender email addresses carefully, avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unexpected messages, and contact the city’s call center at 480-312-5000 if uncertain about any communication. Suspected phishing emails should be deleted immediately and reported to Constituent Services.
The City of Scottsdale said it will continue providing updates as necessary to protect residents.
