Periods of heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms are expected in Scottsdale this weekend, raising the risk of hazardous conditions and possible flooding. City officials are urging residents to stay alert for changing weather, review their flood preparedness plans, and take steps now to protect themselves and their property.
The city provides sand and empty bags at no cost for residents who want to create sandbags as a defense against flooding. Supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis at two locations: the Scottsdale Water Campus near 88th Street and Union Hills Drive, and the Scottsdale Police Department District 1 at 7601 E. McKellips Road. Residents must bring their own shovels to fill the bags.
Other flood protection options include flood diversion tubes that can be filled with water using a garden hose, as well as portable flood fencing and water-absorbing cushions. These products can be found at local hardware stores or through online suppliers.
The city recommends several steps for storm preparation:
“Emergency supplies: Keep flashlights, extra batteries, and bottled water on hand. For a full list of recommended items, visit ready.gov/kit.”
“Family communication: Establish a plan with family members so everyone knows how to connect during an emergency. Visit ready.gov/make-a-plan for planning tools and guidance.”
Residents are also encouraged to follow Scottsdale on Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) for updates on weather impacts across the city.
Before visiting parks or recreational areas in Scottsdale, people should check ahead for any closures due to wet conditions. The latest information about facility and trail access is available at ScottsdaleAZ.gov.
City officials remind everyone to prioritize safety, plan ahead, and use caution around fast-moving water.
