Scottsdale Police horse Aiden has retired after 13 years of service to the community. The 20-year-old Percheron/Thoroughbred crossbreed will now work as a therapy horse at Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship.

Aiden joined the Scottsdale Police Mounted Unit in June 2012, at seven years old. He was previously involved in Hunter/Jumper competitions. His training, intelligence, and athleticism led to his recommendation by the Mounted Unit veterinarian. Aiden quickly adapted to police training and became a valued member of the unit.

Throughout his career, Aiden patrolled Old Town Scottsdale’s Entertainment District on weekend nights and participated in various events like the WM Phoenix Open, Super Bowl, and New Year’s Eve festivities. He also attended police memorials and other ceremonial events, protests, and civil unrest demonstrations across the valley. Aiden engaged with community members through education demonstrations, neighborhood block parties, school visits, and several Parada del Sol parades. Officers Debbie Shuhandler, Aaron Bolin, and Keegan DeShotel partnered with him during his service.

In retirement, Aiden is enjoying his new role as a therapy horse at Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship. His new role suits him well as he enjoys interacting with people and making new friends. He has been paired with a retired police officer who attends lessons at Camelot.

Standing six feet tall at the shoulder and weighing about 1700 pounds, Aiden’s gentle nature made him an able partner for officers. His presence will be missed at the police barn but he continues to be loved in his new home.
