Scottsdale has opened Fire Station 612 in the city’s northern area, aiming to improve emergency response for local residents. The new station, located at Hayden Road and Mayo Boulevard, began operations on September 22.

The facility is expected to handle more than 2,000 incidents each year. It becomes the city’s 16th fire station and contributes to the Phoenix regional automatic aid system. According to the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE), decisions about opening new stations are based on community risk assessments and standards that measure response times and effectiveness. These factors led to the establishment of Fire Station 612 to meet increasing demand in the area.

Residents are invited to tour the new station during a public open house scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. on October 3. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet fire department personnel, learn about their work, and explore the building’s features.

The 12,000-square-foot facility includes four apparatus bays, sleeping quarters for up to twelve firefighters, a full kitchen and dining area, storage for protective equipment, a decontamination space compliant with OSHA regulations, fitness facilities, locker rooms, office space, laundry facilities, and a back-up generator. It is staffed by a four-person engine company and a two-person battalion chief unit. Specialized vehicles such as a wildland interface fire attack vehicle and utility support vehicle are also stationed there.

Funding for the $13.7 million project was approved by voters as part of Scottsdale’s 2019 Bond Election.

A public art installation titled Wholeness by artist Maria Salenger of Jones Studio is featured at Station 612. The piece honors firefighters’ service with steel panels that cast shadows forming a Maltese cross—the traditional symbol of firefighting.

“Fire Station 612 represents Scottsdale’s commitment to safety and honoring those who serve,” said Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon. “This facility ensures we can meet the needs of a growing community while providing our firefighters with the resources they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.”
