The city of Scottsdale announced on Mar. 24 that it will offer a series of free Springtime Water Conservation Workshops to help residents reduce outdoor water use and create desert-friendly landscapes.

With outdoor watering accounting for as much as 65–70% of residential water use, the city said these workshops are aimed at giving residents practical skills to save water at home while maintaining attractive yards. The sessions, led by experts from Scottsdale Water, will cover topics such as smart irrigation practices, selecting low-water-use plants, efficient landscape design, and seasonal maintenance tips.

According to the announcement, participants can join three upcoming workshops: Efficient Irrigation Techniques & Controller Programming on April 10; Scottsdale’s Xeriscape Garden Tour on April 24; and Converting Grass to Xeriscape on May 26. Registration details are available by searching “Water Workshop” at ScottsdaleAZ.gov.

Scottsdale has long emphasized the importance of protecting its long-term water supplies for community sustainability and economic health. City programs like these aim to help residents cut utility costs while supporting a resilient future.

The city’s approach is shaped by its council-manager government structure where the council holds authority over legislation, budgeting, and appointments according to the official website. Over time, Scottsdale has developed recreational spaces such as parks and golf courses in Indian Bend Wash through various departments and boards based on official documents.

By 2000, Scottsdale’s population exceeded 202,000 across about 185 square miles according to historical records. The city also ranked among the top 15 safest U.S. cities with populations over 100,000 as reported by Forbes. Known for its blend of Western heritage—earning it the nickname ‘The West’s Most Western Town’—and cultural activities attracting artists and visitors alike according to the official history page, Scottsdale continues to promote initiatives that support its community and environment.

The city encourages residents to take part in these workshops, stating they are a simple way to make meaningful changes for water conservation this spring.
