The city of Scottsdale has joined the Coalition for Protecting Arizona’s Lifeline, a statewide group of municipal leaders focused on safeguarding Arizona’s access to Colorado River water and the Central Arizona Project (CAP). Mayor Lisa Borowsky announced Scottsdale’s participation in the coalition, which brings together mayors from Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal counties.
The coalition was created as a response to increasing challenges facing the Colorado River system. These include ongoing drought conditions, excessive water allocation, and rising tensions among regions dependent on this resource. The CAP aqueduct stretches 336 miles and supplies water to over 80 percent of Arizona residents. This infrastructure is essential for urban areas, agriculture, tribal communities, and economic development across the state.
“As mayor of Scottsdale, I am proud to join fellow leaders across Arizona to protect our state’s water lifeline,” Mayor Borowsky said. “Scottsdale’s world-renowned quality of life, thriving economy, and desert heritage all depend on water stewardship. Through this coalition, we are amplifying our voice and our impact to ensure a resilient water future for generations to come.”
Scottsdale has implemented several conservation initiatives over the years. The city offers turf removal rebates and promotes reclaimed water systems along with landscaping suitable for desert environments. In 2024 alone, these rebate programs resulted in savings of more than 22 million gallons of water. Over the past quarter-century, Scottsdale’s parks system has conserved upwards of 3 billion gallons.
The coalition aims to provide accurate information about water issues, encourage best practices among municipalities, and advocate for policies that protect Arizona’s communities and long-term interests.
“By joining forces, we can counter misinformation, share best practices, and champion policies that protect our communities and our future,” Mayor Borowsky added.
