The City of Scottsdale announced on March 16 a series of upcoming community events, public meetings, and recent recognitions for innovation and safety. The city will honor Vietnam veterans on March 29 at the Civic Center with a free event hosted by the Scottsdale Veterans Advisory Commission. Francisco “Frank” Moreno, a Vietnam veteran and former U.S. Army paratrooper and helicopter pilot, will be the featured speaker. Moreno’s service includes enforcing desegregation orders in Little Rock in 1957 and flying rescue missions during the Battle of Ia Drang.

The city is also seeking public input as it updates its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan. Two meetings are scheduled for March 26 at the Granite Reef Senior Center to discuss accessibility improvements across city facilities and services. This effort is part of Scottsdale’s ongoing commitment to ADA compliance.

Scottsdale recently received national recognition for its technology initiatives. The city earned a 2026 CSO Award for cybersecurity transformation and was named overall winner in the Smart Cities North America Awards for its police department’s AI-powered Real Time Crime Center and Drone-as-First-Responder program. These awards highlight Scottsdale’s leadership in using advanced technology to enhance public safety and deliver reliable services.

Several public meetings are planned for late March, including sessions of the Tourism Development Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, Airport Advisory Commission, City Council, Neighborhood Advisory Commission, Housing Agency Governing Board, and Human Services Advisory Commission. Residents can learn more about these boards’ responsibilities or find additional meeting information online.

Community activities include celebrations such as the Granite Reef Senior Center’s 20th anniversary on March 21 and Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West unveiling its new expansion on March 28. Bike Month events begin with Tour de Scottsdale on March 28 followed by Cycle the Arts on April 19.

Scottsdale has drawn artists, writers, and health seekers since its early years while blending Western heritage with cultural activities as outlined on the official history page. The city features various departments, boards, parks, golf courses in Indian Bend Wash according to its organizational chart, operates under a council-manager government structure according to its official website, and had over 202,000 residents by 2000 according to historical records. Forbes ranked Scottsdale among the top fifteen safest U.S. cities with populations over 100,000 as reported by official sources. The city’s nickname ‘The West’s Most Western Town’ reflects its ranching roots and tourism appeal according to historical accounts.

Looking ahead, residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming events or provide feedback on city plans as Scottsdale continues efforts to improve accessibility, celebrate local culture, support veterans, expand infrastructure projects like groundwater wells for water reliability, and maintain high standards for safety.
