Rep. David Schweikert, U.S. Congressman representing Arizona’s 1st district since 2011, has raised concerns on social media about the growing national debt and future fiscal burdens facing Americans.

On April 7, 2026, Schweikert posted: “Before Labor Day, another $1,000,000,000,000 in debt. The national debt is already $38,980,000,000,000. It is growing at $87,685.82 every second.”

The following day, he commented on federal pension liabilities: “104%. That is what a child born today needs in lifetime earnings just to pay federal pension promises. In less than 6.5 years, the Social Security trust fund is empty and the Medicare trust fund is empty. That is how you make our kids poorer and double poverty of seniors.” Also on April 8th he wrote: “We live next door to California. Nobody is fleeing success.”

Schweikert’s comments come as he continues his tenure in Congress after defeating Amish Shah in the 2024 general election with 51.9% of the vote and Jevin Hodge in the 2022 election with 50.4% of the vote. He was born in Los Angeles in 1962 and currently resides in Fountain Hills.

Since first replacing Harry Mitchell in Congress in 2011 after previously serving in the Arizona House of Representatives from 1991 to 1995, Schweikert has focused on fiscal issues throughout his career. He holds degrees from Arizona State University earned in both 1988 and again in 2005.
