Rep. David Schweikert, U.S. Congressman representing Arizona’s 1st district since 2011, posted a series of tweets on March 8 and 9, 2026, discussing personal moments and policy concerns regarding Social Security and Medicare.
On March 8, Schweikert shared a lighthearted moment from Washington D.C., writing, “Matthew joined me in D.C. this week and immediately fell in love with the buttons.”
The following day, Schweikert addressed looming cuts to federal entitlement programs. He stated on March 9, “If you’re in your late 50s, Washington has already scheduled a 24% cut to your Social Security and an 11% cut to Medicare hospitals in about six and a half years. First-year price tag to stop it is roughly $638,000,000,000.” Later that day, he expanded on possible solutions: “Fixing this means getting serious on the drivers. Crash the cost of chronic disease. Clean up the games in Medicare Advantage. Let new tech and care models in instead of protecting old billing schemes. We can save the trust funds without breaking seniors.”
Schweikert has served as Arizona’s representative since replacing Harry Mitchell in Congress in 2011. He previously served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 1991 to 1995 and was born in Los Angeles in 1962 before moving to Fountain Hills. In recent elections, Schweikert narrowly defeated Jevin Hodge in 2022 and Amish Shah in 2024 for his congressional seat.
Schweikert is an alumnus of Arizona State University, Tempe.
