Rep. David Schweikert, a U.S. Congressman representing Arizona’s 1st district since 2011, addressed demographic and fiscal challenges facing the United States in a series of posts on February 24, 2026.
In his first post at 20:40 UTC, Schweikert wrote, “We doubled the number of 65-year-olds since 2004 on about the same number of 18-year-olds. That gap is why Washington is borrowing around $148,000 a second. You have to fix spending and raise productivity for the workers we already have.”
Later that day at 21:18 UTC, Schweikert highlighted his engagement with tribal leaders: “Productive conversation today with Pascua Yaqui Tribe leaders on water settlement and land-into-trust needs. We have work to do in Congress to keep commitments and support long-term stability for their community.”
At 22:05 UTC, he returned to the topic of federal spending and demographics, stating, “In 33 months more than half of federal spending goes to Americans 65 and older. We have about the same number of 18 year olds as 20 years ago and twice as many 65 year olds. The math is going to win this argument whether Washington admits it or not.”
Schweikert has served in Congress since replacing Harry Mitchell in 2011 and previously held office in the Arizona House of Representatives from 1991 to 1995. He was born in Los Angeles in 1962 and resides in Fountain Hills. Schweikert graduated from Arizona State University, Tempe with degrees earned in both 1988 and again in 2005.
He won re-election against Amish Shah in the general election held in November 2024 by securing approximately 51.9% of the vote.
