Joseph Chaplik, Republican House Representative for Arizona’s Legislative District 3, said Governor Katie Hobbs’ rejection of a $1.1 billion Republican tax conformity bill shortly after her address demonstrates the placement of unfit leaders and disregard for state economic relief.

“It took less than 4 days for Katie Hobbs to prove what we all knew,” said Chaplik. “She was lying in her State of the State speech and she doesn’t care about making Arizona affordable again. Nothing good can happen when you put unqualified people in positions of power. AZ deserves better.”

Chaplik’s statement was shared in an X post responding to Governor Katie Hobbs’ veto of a Republican-backed tax cut plan. The post featured a screenshot of a news headline detailing the $1.1 billion veto and addressed policy contradictions following her State of the State speech. This action underscores immediate pushback against executive decisions impacting Arizona taxpayers.

Arizona Republicans advanced a $1.1 billion tax conformity bill to align state codes with federal cuts, aiming to deliver relief over three years through simplified filings. The veto leaves taxpayers facing uncertainty, as the state requires legislative approval for federal conformity unlike automatic systems in other areas. Local filings indicate 88% of Arizonans rely on standard deductions that such measures would affect.

Federal tax cuts under President Trump lowered rates and boosted deductions, prompting states to conform for consistent taxpayer benefits. Nationwide, most jurisdictions automatically update to federal changes to reduce compliance burdens, though some like Arizona mandate specific votes. These alignments support millions in streamlined returns across the U.S.

Chaplik serves as Republican House Representative for Arizona’s District 3, assuming office in 2023 after winning the 2020 primary. He works in investment real estate and backs law enforcement via the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Memorial Fund. Chaplik, age 53, is campaigning for Congress in AZ-01 with a focus on America-First policies.
