For many people, weight loss has been seen as a straightforward process involving eating less and exercising more. Patsy James, wellness coach and managing partner of My Healthy Body in Scottsdale, argues that this approach overlooks the emotional factors that are crucial for long-term change.

James has maintained a weight loss of over 100 pounds for more than two decades. She said her challenges with diets were not about lacking willpower but about unaddressed emotional issues. “I didn’t fail diets because I lacked willpower,” James said. “I struggled because no one ever taught me how to work through emotional triggers, shame, or the stories I was telling myself about my body and my worth.”

Drawing from both her personal journey and professional experience, James emphasizes the importance of addressing mental and emotional well-being alongside physical health. Her coaching combines mindset development, compassionate support, and individualized guidance aimed at sustainable results without focusing on shame.

“Most people know what to eat,” she explained. “What they don’t know is why they eat the way they do when they’re stressed, overwhelmed, or exhausted. That’s where real change begins.”

Through her programs, James works with clients to identify and heal emotional obstacles that can hinder progress in weight management. She focuses on shifting away from self-blame towards practical strategies and consistent support.

James offers three foundational steps for those seeking lasting changes:

– Identify emotional triggers by observing patterns linked to stress or loneliness.
– Replace shame with strategic planning by setting realistic goals.
– Rely on a supportive care team including coaching and community resources.

“Weight loss isn’t about being perfect,” she said. “It’s about feeling supported, understood, and capable of change especially on the hard days.”

Currently leading Patsy James Gentle Transformation coaching programs and My Healthy Body Medical Weight Loss Clinic, James continues to help individuals improve their relationship with their bodies while focusing on respect and enduring outcomes.
