Mayor Lisa Borowsky announced on Apr. 14 that she supports a re-evaluation of the proposed parking garage project in Old Town Scottsdale, urging a new comprehensive study based on updated data before moving forward with significant taxpayer spending.
Borowsky said that responsible planning is needed to ensure public funds are used wisely and reflect current community needs. She highlighted the engagement of more than 5,000 residents and stakeholders who have signed a petition asking for a pause and thorough analysis before any commitment is made.
“Old Town Scottsdale is the heart of our city ā where residents gather, small businesses thrive, and visitors experience what makes our community special. It deserves thoughtful, responsible planning, especially when taxpayer dollars are involved,” Borowsky said. She added that her request for a public meeting to discuss the issue has been blocked three times: “That request has been blocked each time ā the exact opposite of the transparency and respect our citizens deserve.”
Borowsky questioned whether an expensive new garage at the proposed location is necessary or if alternatives such as better signage or smarter management could address parking challenges more efficiently. “The most expensive mistake is not delaying, it is getting it wrong,” she said.
She also pointed out that conditions in Old Town have changed over recent years due to shifts in travel patterns and technology: “Good planning is not a one-time event ā it requires decisions grounded in current reality.” Before committing over $20 million to the project, Borowsky called for confirmation that there is clear need supported by up-to-date information.
Borowsky’s tenure as mayor follows her earlier service on the Scottsdale City Council from 2008 to 2012 where she advocated fiscal conservatism and budget improvements according to the official website. Her background includes support for community service initiatives benefiting children, older adults, and underprivileged youth through board roles according to the official website. The mayor’s office also emphasized resident engagement through regular updates and reports according to the official website.
As someone who has lived in Scottsdale all her life according to the official website, Borowsky concluded: “Supporting a new study is the prudent path forward. It ensures transparency, invites public input, and gives us confidence that when we move forward, we are doing so with clarity and purpose.”
