Rep. David Schweikert, U.S. Congressman representing Arizona’s 1st district since 2011, used his Twitter account this week to raise concerns about the federal government’s fiscal trajectory, focusing on issues related to national debt, Social Security, Medicare, and health care fraud.

On April 30, Schweikert posted, “Today, we will borrow $88,000 every second. Every second. The way the law is written today, Social Security is six years from a 24% cut. Medicare’s trust fund is gone. Hospitals take a cut. But we’re not supposed to say that out loud in an election year.”

The following day, May 1, he continued with a warning about the rising cost of government borrowing: “We are heading toward a time where interest becomes the single biggest cost in this government. That buys you what?”

Later on May 1, Schweikert referenced ongoing efforts by the House Ways and Means Committee regarding health care fraud: “This is why @WaysandMeansGOP held last week’s hearing on health care fraud. We have been working on this for months. Pay-and-chase has to end. Use the data. Find the fraud. Stop the money before it ever goes out the door.”

Schweikert has represented Arizona’s 1st District in Congress since replacing Harry Mitchell in 2011 and previously served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 1991 to 1995. He was born in Los Angeles in 1962 and currently resides in Fountain Hills at age 61.

Schweikert won re-election against Amish Shah in 2024 by a margin of approximately three percentage points and narrowly defeated Jevin Hodge in 2022.
