House Education Committee Chairman Matt Gress and Senate Education Committee Chairman Hildy Angius have criticized a series of teacher sick-outs that led to the closure of numerous public school campuses across Arizona last week. The closures, which affected thousands of students and their families, coincided with organized political protests, raising concerns about the use of sick leave for activism.
Chairman Gress expressed his disapproval, stating, “Shutting down schools through coordinated sick-outs is unacceptable.” He emphasized the impact on students’ learning and the unexpected burden placed on parents needing childcare. Gress added that public schools should focus on education rather than political movements.
Senate Education Chairman Hildy Angius also voiced her concerns, highlighting a lack of accountability within district systems. She said that using sick leave to close campuses undermines trust in public schools. Both chairmen are working on legislation to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
Gress was elected to the Arizona State House in 2023, representing the state’s 4th House District. More details about the proposed legislation will be released once it is introduced.
