Arizona Public Service (APS) announced on Mar. 21 that it is offering customers advice on staying safe and saving energy as the Phoenix area experiences an unusually early heat wave, with temperatures reaching into the 90s and possibly higher.

The guidance comes as many residents face increased energy use due to earlier-than-expected air conditioning needs, which can lead to higher utility bills. APS recommends that customers take steps such as replacing air filters, checking door seals, and adjusting thermostat settings to help manage costs while keeping cool.

Among the tips provided by APS are comparing available rate plans, using ceiling fans in a counterclockwise direction for better cooling, raising thermostats when away from home, using window coverings to block sunlight, checking weather stripping around doors and windows, and scheduling HVAC tune-ups. The company also highlights programs like Budget Billing to help even out monthly payments and assistance options for those facing financial hardship. “Customers in a financial bind may qualify for up to $1,000 per year in bill payment assistance,” APS said. Additional support includes discounts of up to 60% on energy bills for qualifying households and help with air conditioner repairs or replacements.

APS encourages customers to check on friends and neighbors during hot weather—especially early in the season—and reminds everyone about resources from the Arizona Emergency Information Network and Arizona Department of Health Services for further safety information.

APS serves 1.4 million homes and businesses across most of Arizona’s counties. The company maintains a diverse mix of energy sources including nuclear power from Palo Verde Generating Station, natural gas, coal, solar, wind, and storage technologies—about 58% of which are classified as clean energy.
