Angy Shearer has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, effective December 15, 2025. Shearer comes to the organization with significant experience in nonprofit leadership and fundraising.
Shearer most recently served as Vice President of Advancement at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, where she oversaw philanthropic strategy and community engagement since 2024. Before that, she was Associate Vice President of Major Gifts at United Way of Southern Arizona.
“We are thrilled to welcome Angy’s leadership and vision to the Conservancy,” said Melinda Xanthos, Acting Board Chair of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. “Her proven track record in advancing nonprofit missions and engaging communities will be invaluable as we continue to lead conservation in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve through stewardship, science and education.”
“In a landscape shaped by time and resilience, stewardship is a shared responsibility, and I’m honored to be leading that work at the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy,” said Angy Shearer.
Joseph Specter, President and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, commented on Shearer’s departure: “Angy has been a thoughtful and trusted partner in advancing the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s mission. Her leadership has strengthened our community of supporters and helped position us for the future. We’re grateful for all she has contributed and wish her every success as she steps into this new role with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.”
Mike Roberts, who is currently serving as Interim CEO at the Conservancy, will oversee a transition plan over three months before returning to his previous role as Board Chair. Roberts led the organization through recent changes aimed at renewal.
The appointment signals a new phase for the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy as it continues its efforts in conservation, education, and public engagement within Scottsdale’s more than 30,500-acre preserve. The organization relies on support from donors rather than revenue from land use.
The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy focuses on research initiatives, trail maintenance and patrols, guided recreational activities, and educational programs designed for all ages. The preserve receives over 750,000 visitors annually.
